B12K : Google and Fibre Optic Internet
Mar 1st
Google has announced its intention to deploy a 1 Gbps high-speed Internet network , which will be tested among a sample of U.S. citizens. The idea is to encourage the emergence of a new kind of applications .
After electricity, Google is trying a new incursion into an unprecedented area with becoming a supplier of broadband network.
the company announced it will deploy a network high-speed fiber optic service (Fiber To The Home FTTH) to 1 Gbit / s – 100 times faster than current Internet access.
In the U.S. the first operator in terms of optic fiber is Verizon: it offers the 50 Mbit / s (download) for $ 140 per month.
The experiment will take place in several regions of the United States to reach a minimum of 50 000 people , and can be extended to 500 000 users.
The leader in search engines refers to “competitive prices” without saying more. But the goal is primarily to test new uses. Google hopes to see developers including work on a new generation of applications.
The idea is also to test new technology of deployment and knowledge share with partners.
More than just a search engine
This new projects shows clearly that Google has decided to expand its activities beyond its initial business, which searching on the internet.
The group, among the most prosperous in the world, is trying every mean to facilitate theaccess to the Internet since its revenues are directly related to its use.
It has also invested in the segment of mobile phones with its Android operating system and with an entirely new mobile phone .the Nexus One.
B12K : The Google Nexus One
Jan 21st
Google has decided to launch its own Smartphone. Called Nexus One, presented by the Californian giant of the Internet. This “smartphone” features a high resolution screen of 3.7 inches (9.4 centimeters), a processor running at 1 GHz and a camera of 5 megapixels.
Manufactured by The Taiwanese HTC, it can be purchased directly on the U.S. site of Google (no subscription with an operator) for 529 dollars or 179 dollars with a two-year contract with T-Mobile USA.
Until now, Google had limited itself to providing a free operating system for mobile phones manufacturers, commonly known as Android. A year after its launch it has achieved a great breakthrough, with approximately 3.5% market share. The Google executives had repeatedly that they didn’t want to sell a phone directly .so why have they crossed this boundaries today?
The dazzling success of the iPhone is for something . Two and a half years after its launch, the multimedia phone from Apple has already sold over 30 million copies and is almost one quarter of the total revenues of the brand. Apple has also succeeded with the iPhone, to finally take off the use of mobile Internet, these online services which are accessed from a phone even while moving. Thanks to the “AppStore”, a virtual store accessible by a click, which offers more than 100 000 online services, free or paid, developed by third party publishers (games, news, etc..).
However, the Apple platform owns everything : the computer group controls everything, from the design of the device to its operating system, through the payment system and the contents of the AppStore.
For Google, the main goal this is not to let Apple continue to gain ground in mobile Internet because, if as analysts predict, in few years there will be more connections to the Internet via a mobile than via a computer the stakes are enormous.

The Nexus One should help Google to better promote its Internet services on mobile. The search engine, of course, which ensures its dominance in the world of Internet (over 65% market share), its email service (Gmail), Mapping (Maps), its digital library, etc. . Without that the access to these services is controlled by Apple.
Will The Nexus One be the next “iPhone killer”? Not at that stage, according to experts, who hail its technical performance (the speed of its processor, the quality of the screen) but didn’t find anything revolutionary.

B12K Stories : India , Next target of HTC
Aug 24th
If you from india and have used HTC’s first generation G1 model of smart phone then it is likely that you are keeping your fingers crossed for the launch of HTC magic in India. HTC the Taiwanese company has come up with its latest second generation model, G2 and has launched it in India on Tuesday, which is India first smart phone and it runs on Android operating system. This doesn’t have a Google branding and has a lot of up gradations done to it s previous model. Let’s have a quick check on the best and worst features of the upgraded G2 model.
Having been launched, the G2 the first thing which goes in your mind would be the price. And you guessed it as it comes to Rs.29900. Bharthi Airtel has made an agreement with HTC for unlocking the HTC magic G2 phone. Thus you can buy it from all the relationship centers of Airtel across India or from the HTC resellers which are spread across 17 cities including Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Bhubaneswar, Chandigarh, Chennai, Coimbatore, Cochin, Delhi, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Jalandhar, Kolkata, Ludhiana, Lucknow, Mumbai, Pune and Patna. The Airtel customers are offered with 100 MB monthly download for a span of 6 months.Though both Airtel and Vodafone were well in the race, Airtel has managed to claim it and to your surprise Vodafone is the major carrier of both G1 and G2 in most of countries particularly in Europe. Though it has been tied up with Airtel it doesn’t mean that it can’t be used with any other carrier.
There is a limit on the agreement as it is restricted to the offers given by Airtel to its customers. By the statement of the company it seems that the Airtel customers would be able to take advantage of many utility applications like in-mobile search, hello tunes, weather news, portfolio manager and so on. Giving a thought to the price of G2, it would be really difficult to say how many catchers are there to buy it!!! But it is expected around 1 million HTC Magics would be shipped by August.
Coming to the internals of the smart phone G2, most Linux users would be benefited as this uses Android which is an open source platform based on Linux operating system. It is a very robust operating system and it provides better Outlook synchronization. The device also includes new features like Smart Dialler and has a soft QWERTY keypad. Compared to G1 this seems to be sleeker and a lighter model but with an onscreen keyboard and everything is touch screen. G2 offers a better battery life when compared to G1.
Are you just curious to know specifications of the simply attractive G2 phone? No more wait. It has a wide screen display of 3.2-inch TFT-LCD flat touch-sensitive screen with a resolution of 320×480. It has an auto focus color camera of 3.2 megapixels. it supports a wide range of audio and video formats and it weighs about 118.5 grams which is lighter when compared to G1 weighing 158 grams. On the whole it is really attractive but only for the price. Let’s wait and watch.

Google has found a new way to improve the interaction between a website and Internet users: a new tool called Sidewiki allow users to leave comments on a web page directly from their browser. To do this, Sidewiki appears as a small tab directly integrated to Google toolbar on the browser.
Strangely This new tool is currently only available for Internet Explorer and Firefox. However, the Mountain View company said on its official blog that Sidewiki should soon be available on Google Chrome …
Once on a Web page, users can choose to leave a comment by clicking on the tab Sidewiki of its browser, which will open a window on the left of the browser and the visitor will be able to directly enter their comment and validate it by clicking the “Publish” button. The message left becomes visible to other users who visit the website.
Users can also share comments on his Facebook profile, Twitter, Google profile or from an e-mail.
To encourage users to leave many comments through Sidewiki, Google ensures that the messages that are the most interesting and relevant and not necessarily the most recent will be highlighted. To this end, the Internet giant affirms to have developed a special algorithm to determine the ranking of reviews: it takes into account the feedback from other users through a voting system, based on the already published comments by the author.
This algorithm would also have the ability to detect spam and abusive or slanderous comments, and block them.
Presented as a tool created to facilitate the inclusion of comments on web pages, Sidewiki might be frowned by publishers, webmasters of websites or bloggers who, if users begin to use massively Sidewiki could lose the control over the comments left on their site.
